Drop-in Program Mentor

Work one-on-one with kids afterschool to support their science exploration and to help bring their ideas to life! It’s a rewarding opportunity to have a meaningful, long-term impact on their lives. Science knowledge or ability to use tools is welcome, but not required. The most important thing is to enjoy working with young people, and be supportive, encouraging, and caring.

Science Bus Facilitator

Jump onboard the traveling Science Workshop! Our colorful science bus travels to a wide array of free Pittsburgh community events April through November. Come share a special experiment or science demo of your choice, and help visitors of all ages interact with our fascinating collection of onboard exhibits!

Guest Visitor

Calling all metal smiths, goat-herders, fisherman, costume designers, bird watchers, robotics tinkerers, plant nerds! Do you enjoy working with kids and have something to share related to science and engineering? We invite you to visit our afterschool program so that participants get to try something new, with you!

Exhibit Builder

If you like tinkering and constructing, come build exhibits! From Physics contraptions to assembling skeletons, we can work with you to identify and build awesome science. The exhibits you create will be enjoyed by thousands of participants in Science Workshop programs in Pittsburgh, and can hit the road with our mobile program, too.

Greenspace Developer

Design and care for the Science Workshop’s gardens and wild spaces! Nature brings us joy and plants support so many wonderful inquiry paths, including botany, entomology, ecology, chemistry, and agricultural science.

Behind the Scenes

There are many important roles for volunteers behind the scenes, for example: serving on the Board of Directors or Advisory Council, helping with web design, marketing, and social media, or contributing to development and fundraising. Join the team!
